Community Day Tree Inventory

ASC Community Day Tree Inventory Team

On May 21, 2015, the Arboretum co-sponsored with the Tree Campus USA Tree Advisory Committee and the Office of Sustainability a wonderful project during the annual Community Day festivities at the College.

Eight members of the faculty and staff worked under the direction of campus arborist Dudley Hartel, Arboretum co-founder Jim Abbot, and Susan Granbery of the Georgia Forestry Commission to inventory about 50 trees in the northwest corner of the campus.

Participants learned about the whys and wherefores of a tree inventory and the data that they would be collecting that day. After being trained in the use of a laser rangefinder, the measuring of diameter at breast height (DBH), and all the other essentials of a tree inventory, two teams of four eager tree huggers apiece headed out under the trees. See below for pictures of a terrific day counting and measuring trees!
